There are many articles, claimed to have been written by experts in the filed, about techniques in Search Engine Optimization. These techniques are usually followed by others who are new in Search Engine Optimization consequently creating myths which may or may not be helpful.

Here are some of examples:

Submit your websites to search engines and this will bring- in  visitors/traffic.

  • When you submit your website to search engines, it does not mean your site will have visitors. Your website should be optimized for search engines. If it is not optimized, your site will probably not be listed in the search engine results page or it could end up on the last result page. Before submitting your website, be sure that it is optimized so that you will not waste time and money.

Websites should be submitted to atleast 1,500 search engines

  • Submitting your website to 1,500 search engines is useless because there are only about 3 international search engines and almost the same amount of search engines for a specific country, which would bring you about 99% of your search engine visitors. Some sites are not search engines, just focus on the on search engines that are commonly used by web users. If your website has many incoming links, you do not have to submit your website because search engines will automatically find your website through links and you will get higher value than directly submitted page because your site is being linked by others.

Use META tags to improve your search engine ranking.

  • META keywords tag is not used by most search engines to determine ranking of a website because it had been abused in the past to trick search engines. META Description tag is still useful because its description will be displayed on the query result page in search engines.

Cloaking will lead your website to a higher rank

  • This technique is hiding some content of your site. Using this technique might work on some search engines but this technique will get your website banned.
